I received ‘People of Abandoned Character’ by Clare Whitfield as part of my Bert’s books crime/thriller subscription. I haven’t read many historical fiction books lately and so this was a treat. I really liked this book and found it to be remarkably interesting at the same time.
This book is set in London 1888 and follows the main character Susannah as she tries to settle into married life with her husband, who is a surgeon.
She gets very lonely and begins to take an interest in the killings taking place on the streets of Whitechapel and starts to have her suspicions on who ‘Jack the Ripper’ could be.
I must admit that I do find reading about historical serial killers interesting, so this book did appeal to me straight away. I enjoyed how this was different in the way that it was told from a female’s perspective as the events unfolded in London.
It was emotional at times with some of the situations Susannah found herself involved in and I couldn’t help but feel to be in the characters head at times.
Overall, I would say this is a very professionally written historical fiction book. Emotional but also a great read for crime fans.
