DI Nick Dixon series – Books 1-3 by Damien Boyd

I first heard of Damien Boyd when I saw the book ‘Down among the Dead’. I really wanted to read, but I didn’t want to start in the middle of a series. I therefore purchased the first book of the DI Nick Dixon series ‘As the Crow Flies’.

This series follows Dixon through murder investigations in the quiet town of Burnham–on-Sea. Throughout the three books I have completed Nick’s character develops more and I have come to really like him and the way he will stop at nothing, including breaking the rules, to find the killer.

These books are quite short at around 180-220 pages each. I love this though as it is nice to have a shorter book sometimes. It feels as if you are following a police crime TV series and each book is an episode. I’m not sure if they have already been on TV, but if not then they should.

Each book is set in a different area of the small town and throughout the books I was kept guessing who the murderer could be.

Here is a short review for each of the books 1-3 of the series:

As the Crow Flies

DI Nick Dixon’s former climbing partner, Jake Fayter has a fatal climbing accident. Foul play is not considered to most, but DI Nick Dixon is adamant he needs to investigate further to confirm. What follows is several secrets exposed and more murders. Dixon must unravel the truth to find the murderer.

I really enjoyed this book and I found myself ordering the second in the series soon after reading. It kept me guessing until the end.

Head in the Sand

A severed head is found in the bunker on the town’s golf course. The crime shocks the residents, and the investigation uncovers more secrets of the inhabitants of the quiet town. Dixon must determine the truth before more murders occur.

Another great Damien Boyd book. Kept me guessing until the end, and I love how the characters feel so real when reading.

Kickback

Noel, a groom in a local stable is found dead in one of the horse’s stables, and the death is ruled an accident. This is until the brother returns from Afghanistan and claims that his brother was murdered. Given no other choice Dixon re-opens the investigation and quickly finds there could be a number of possible suspects. This investigation brings danger to his front door, and Dixon must find the killer whatever it takes.

I love this series; I can picture the characters as the events unfold and the tension builds throughout. You can’t help but love DI Nick Dixon, and I am looking forward to reading the next in the series ‘Swan Song’ very soon.
