Before I Met You – Lisa Jewell

I received ‘Before I Met You’ by Lisa Jewell as part of my author back-order subscription from @BertsBooks. This was very different to the other Lisa Jewell books I have read before, but it was stunning.

This book is set in London and follows two women from Guernsey, Arlette, and her step granddaughter Betty.

Arlette’s story is from the 1920’s she goes to London to stay with family friends to see where her life will take her, hoping to escape her hometown of Guernsey. This elegant woman discovers the new jazz scene in London, living her life to the full.

Betty’s story is set in the 1990’s she is also keen to start a life outside of Guernsey and has always had a dream of living in Soho. When her grandmother dies her will leaves a large sum to a mysterious woman, so she takes her chance and moves to London to investigate.

The story alternates between the two periods in time and what follows is a story of secrets, love, and heartbreak.

I loved this book, there is something about books that go between two periods in time that I adore. I have previously read a few of Lucinda Riley’s books and I would say that this was of a similar style. I felt every moment in the story, and it was really moving and wonderful. I didn’t want the book to end and got wrapped up in both Arlette & Betty’s lives.

Overall, a beautiful, romantic, family drama with heart-breaking secrets.
