The Appeal – Janice Hallett

I bought ‘The Appeal’ by Janice Hallett earlier this year and it has been on my TBR pile for a while. I have seen a lot about this book on twitter recently, so I just had to put to the top of the pile, to find out how it is for myself.

Excerpt from the front cover:

Someone was murdered,

Someone went to prison,

And everyone’s a suspect,

Can you uncover the truth?

My Review:

This book follows Femi and Charlotte as they look through all the evidence sent to them by Roderick Tanner regarding one of his appeal cases.

Through evidence which consists of emails and other documents relating to the members of the Fairway Players and associates, they must uncover the truth.

The Fairway Players are a theatre group who are staging a performance of ‘All My Son’s’ for the charity appeal for Poppy. Poppy is the daughter and granddaughter of members of the group, and she requires lifesaving treatment.

Will Femi and Charlotte be able to uncover the truth in all the evidence?

And did the correct person go to prison?

What I really liked about this book is that you can follow the evidence with Femi and Charlotte. The book consists of the evidence which has been presented to them, so you get to read it too and try and solve the clues at the same time.

It also helps that Femi and Charlotte have What’s App chats in-between looking at the evidence, as this recaps and summarises the main findings. I especially found this useful, as it turns out I wouldn’t be very good at this.

This style and format are very modern and a new way of presenting a book to its readers, as I said I really enjoyed this idea, and I will be looking out for any future books from this author.

Overall, a modern, innovative crime thriller, which gives you a chance to be your own investigator.

My Rating:

💜💜💜💜 /5

  1. Great review Jenny. This book comes out in 2022 here in N.A. so I am really looking forward to it now. I like that we can examine the evidence along with the characters.
